It's Been Awhile Since I Felt Rejected

Thankfully.

The layers of complex issues between my mother and me have caused a permanent rift that will probably always exist unless we go to counseling. But since we live states away it will probably never happen.

I can learn to forgive, accept, and coexist. But I am terrified that I will pass along the disfunction I suffered to my child.

It feels like I'm coming to yet another crisis of self. Not just who I am but who I am to her and who do I need to be to ensure we don't have these issues in the future? How do I figure out what she needs and adapt? I would do literally anything to make her like me. Is that bad?

Back on Track

In grad school I read studies that claimed that marital satisfaction decreases the first year after a baby is born.

I wondered if that would be true for me. I remember crying six weeks after Double was born just thinking about the idea of sex.

A few weeks later those feelings were gone. But then the PPD kicked in and I can only imagine what the studies say about marital satisfaction when you have a mentally ill spouse!

Over the last 2 years DH and I have both laughed and yelled and talked calmly and argued. We have had hard times and good times. He has been more incredible than I could have ever imagined any person being. But it was still very stressful. Due to my illness and the task of adjusting to a new baby and moving and a new job and, well, ALL the changes in our lives, it has often felt to me like we were just trying to survive.

In the last few months, though, things have changed a lot. I don't know what the catalyst was, but we have been laughing more and enjoying each other. We enjoy our daughter and our time together. Life has finally found a rhythm we are used to and comfortable with. Life feels like it used to, but even better with Double.

It's nice to be back in that place and feel human again. It's one of those things that you don't realize was a problem until it gets better and I'm do glad it did!

Play Kitchen Bloopers

Oh I know you all think I'm such a creative genius (haha).

So I thought I'd show you some I the serious mistakes I've been making
in this play kitchen besides multiple dings and dents from
over-zealous drilling, pounding and a screwing (why are all
woodworking terms also metaphors for sex?), I somehow miscalculated
the door closing mechanisms and I couldn't close it once the hinges
were on. So I had to manually shave down several parts of the door and
fittings to make it fit. Then I had to re-sand and prime and paint.

Another error: when gluing down the burners some glue seeped out that
I didn't clean up. Now I can't get it off so I'm pondering what to do
with that. If you have ideas let me know! I'm going to try a glue
remover but I might also paint over it. We shall see!

However, everything is nearly done! Just a few finishing touches and
then I'll do a big reveal post for you!

A Changed Woman

I swore up and down I wouldn't change. I'd stay in touch with my
friends. I would keep my "priorities" straight (i.e. sewing, knitting,
fashion). It seemed completely reasonable to expect I could be the
same person I was and just add a child- kind of like an accessory or a
pet. Yeah, that wasn't realistic. Or even remotely close.

Six plus months post partum I grappled with what felt like an identity
crisis. Who was I? Was I a lame mother whose sole identity is her
child? I didn't want to be that woman. Was I the cool party girl who
has nice dinners with friends and tried to maintain a fun and
fashionable lifestyle? That no longer felt like me, if it ever did.

In the last year I've struggled to varying degrees with who I am and
what my priorities are. I've come to a firm decision more than once
only to have my latest identity thwarted by my new circumstances. But
one thing is certain: I am not the person I was 3 years ago.

I can't tell if part of my coming to terms with my new persona was
brought on by age or my child or both. Maybe I would have eventually
turned into some modified form of the person I am now. Maybe I would
have eventually realized that I really don't like partying and going
to clubs that much any more. Maybe I would have calmed down my need to
DIY and realized I'd never accomplish everything on my list. But why
would I without a catalyst or distraction to keep me from all those
other things?

Having a child clearly threw me into this identity switcheroo. But the
postpartum depression fueled it even more. A double whammy personality
changer and all of a sudden I'm unrecognizeable. Sure I'm still fun
and goofy and wacky. Sure I'm talkative and creative and crafty, but
how would you ever know? I have trouble staying in touch with friends
and family, something I never would have let slide before AJ. I can't
make time to see my friends because I feel like I can barely keep up
with work and a child. I rarely go out at night and I don't like to
stay up past 11 if I can help it because of a rigid routine mandated
by my ppd and a baby who wakes up at the same time I used to go to
bed. You'd never know me because you never see me!

All the pieces of my life that I once worked so hard to carefully
craft as my identity are gone. I no longer go out. I no longer make
clothes. I no longer have a DIY list a mile long. I've had to
significantly reduce time spend with friends or doing anything I once
considered a mandatory activity. But the weirdest thing about this is
that I don't mind it. At all. I used to be terribly bothered that I
wasn't making enough of myself, doing enough, or getting the most out
I life.

Now, I can relax. Now, my life is simple: work, child, eat, sleep. And
I love it that way. I can see how mothers can get lost in an identity
that revolves around their children because my life revolves around my
daughter. Because she is fun. And amazing. I had no idea. I was
totally unaware that I would enjoy her so much and I am thankful to
her for teaching me how to dramatically alter my crazy lifestyle for
one that matters. I am forever grateful.

I know that someday I'll pick up my hobbies again and be with my
friends or find new ones. But the precious years of my daughter's life
are already flying by so quickly. I want to savor every minute. Thus I
am who I am now and I make no apologies. I love her and I love me and
I love our new life together!

Baby Language!

My big girl is starting to say lots of words, with pronunciations that range from hilarious to adorable. I thought I'd share some of them with you:

foon = food

cumcum = cucumber

peam = cream

knee = boo boo (her first boo boo was on her knee and she didn't yet know the word boo boo, but she could say knee. Thus all boo boos have now become "knees". hehe)

mama = banana or mama

yeh whoa = yellow

thit = sit

titty (hehe) = kitty

mock = milk

beebee = baby doll

jew thee = juice

teetee = thirsty

peace = please

cheeth = cheese

pahtah = pasta

She can also say: come, back, down, up, uh-oh, walk, yeah, no, bath, wash, book, hug, ball, bubble (her first big word) and lots more! Most of these have hand motions too. Too cute!

Many Travels

In the month of September I travelled back and forth between 3 time
zones twice. Once with the whole family for a wedding and once last
week for business to the surprisingly beautiful Hershey, PA (photo).

I'm so glad it over. All that travel was stressful and threw me off.
All of a sudden it's October! However now that I'm finally feeling
settled in the new house and have stability in job and living
situation (and all our close family is married off, meaning no more
Midwest travel for awhile), I feel like I can relax and enjoy my
family and the holidays to come. We probably won't be traveling which
means time at home working on the house or doing other fun family
stuff. And maybe, just maybe I can taper off the klonopin... Travel
taught me some interesting things about sleep and the great news is
that I am handling sleep deprivation like a normal person now. Hooray!
Lots of good going on. What a relief!

Know Your Customer

Now that I have a child my shopping needs have changed. Drastically. I love shopping. It's awesome. But I don't have time to shop now. Ever.

I used to spend 3-4 hours in a store scouring and trying on items. I could go 2 or 3 days in a row after work, during lunch, whatever. I definitely do not have that luxury now. I could go at lunch, but for EXACTLY an hour or less. Why? Because I need to come home and take care of my child. I can't really go after work. I could go after she's in bed, but in all these situations my time is constrained either by my child or by the store closing.

I could take her. On the weekends. But stores are busy and crowded and meltdowns occur in about 1 hour of time. I could go without her, but that sacrifices family time. That means I need to get in, get what I need, and get out.

Ordering online is my new thing. Stores like Zappos that offer free returns are my mainstay.
I also shop online for things that I eventually buy in stores. By the time I go to the store I know EXACTLY what I want to look at/try on. This minimizes store time. Personal shopping is another helpful thing. Department stores offer them for free. You call ahead, say what you want. Make an appointment, try a billion things on that THEY get for you (they know where things are, can get you more sizes, etc.), buy what you need. Move on.

That's why I was SUPER IRKED when I went car shopping yesterday. The sales person tried to "sell" me on the car. Really?

I told him I wanted to pay no more than a certain amount.
He said, "No, lets find the right car for you first."
I said, "No, tell me what it costs to add the features and then I'll decide which ones I want and which I can live without to stay within my budget."
He asks, "How are you paying?"
I say, "Cash."
He says, "No, a monthly payment is better."
Really?

I'm holding a screaming child. I'm chasing after her in the lot. Do you think I have time for this? I know what I want. I know what I need. I don't have time to be "sold" to. I don't have time to leisurely look at cars and drive them. In fact, I can't even drive them because it requires me putting a car seat in all the cars I want to test drive. Then getting said screaming child into the car seat MULTIPLE TIMES. Hell no.

Know your customer. See a busy mom who knows what she wants chasing after a child? Find out what she wants and needs. Get to the point. Give her your card so she can move on. Same goes for almost EVERY retail experience.

It almost makes me want to sell cars to moms only just so I can be sensitive to their needs. What a pain shopping is now that I have a kid!

Hula Baby

I freaking love my toddler. She is so freaking cute! And amazing. And interesting. It's so fun to watch her. In the above photo she's getting ready to go to a tikki party next door.

Yesterday we were in a waiting room and 2 kids came in. She was faced the other direction playing with some toys. At some point, she turned around and looked at the younger one who was probably around 4. She'd stare at him until he looked at her to get his attention then smile and turn back. She did this 3 or so times and the other kid was sort of doing the same. He would smile. It was like they were sharing some secret language. I sat there watching the exchange, completely amused. I wondered, "do all kids do this? Do they notice each other and naturally make friends right there?" I wondered if I did that when I was a kid. Maybe I did. I remember talking to other kids while my mom did things while we were out. I guess I'll find out! At any rate, it was so interesting to watch. I think Double's going to be an amazing social experiment! :-)

I don't have evidence, but I heard the results of a survey once that asked women who were and were not mothers if there was much of a difference between people with and without kids. The non-mothers all said, "no, there's not much difference between people with and without kids," but all the mothers said, "YES! There's a HUGE difference between people with and without kids." And it's so true.

I always thought I'd be one of those mothers who effortlessly happened to have a child and then focused on herself. I envisioned my lifestyle being essentially identical to the way it was, but I happened to have a kid. I'd get a babysitter or have my husband watch her while I went out with my friends and went shopping. I'd shop with her. We'd go to museums and walk around with her in her stroller. She'd eat meals with us. Everything would be easy and smooth (after she wasn't a baby anymore).

Um, yeah, that's not the case. What is it really like? Everything revolves around my child. Everything. I thought I wouldn't be obsessed with her. I thought I would be able to have a place for her and place for life. But life has become her. It's crazy! I guess part of it is that I really LIKE her. She's fun, she's cute. Everything she does is the coolest thing ever. She's small, she needs me to feed her, care for her, make sure she gets enough water, diaper changes, baths stimulation, book reading, and more. Oi vey, it makes my head spin just thinking about all that she requires for care. By the time I've done all that, it's time to do it again, and again, and again.

When we leave it requires tons of effort. Bring: extra clothes, snacks, sippy cups, diapers, wipes, pacifiers, toys, strollers, carriers, and snacks and water for me. Even if I wanted to remain coolly detached, I'd still have to remember all these things. Once we are outside of the house, does she want to primly sit in her stroller while I do everything I want? Not any more. She wants to get up. She wants to walk around. She wants to pick up cigarette butts from the street. She wants to run down hills, take off her shoes, play in the dirt, eat sand, eat snacks, eat other people's snacks, push other people's strollers, climb on things, etc. It's exhausting. Do I get to do what I want? HA! What I want now is to just have a good time with my family and if my girl gets to have a good time, I'm good. I've suspended all needs to do anything specific unless I plan for it that way. Want to go shopping? I've got an hour at best or else I need Aaron to watch her. Want to hang out with friends? Fine, but expect that one of us will chase her while the other one has an adult conversation and then trade.

You can't help but think about her ALL THE TIME. Maybe it gets easier, but probably not for the forseeable future. I totally get how people with kids lose track of their friends without kids. Who wants to hang out with someone while they have half a conversation while chasing their kid? Not me! At least if you are with another mother with a kid the same age, they get it. You exist while chasing your kids and are content with a partial conversation.

In other news, AJ got her first boo boo... :-( Poor pet! It was very sweet though to put a cute little bandaid on her knee for the first time, though. I have to say I felt very good about being her mommy who could make her boo boo feel better! :-) So sweet.

Two Seasons Late

As time marches on in my new decade, I hope I'll finally learn what I love and what I hate and never buy clothes that fit badly ever again--choosing quality over quantity.

But, somehow that hasn't happened yet. I'm still not totally sure what my style is and it doesn't help that the trends change so fast I can barely keep up.

I've learned a few things over the years. I don't do tight, body-hugging knits any more--at least not cheap ones. I like knits that are thick and soft and come from J. Crew and Nordstrom. I'm currently in some kind of Jeffrey Campbell shoe fog where I only want to buy shoes he makes or shoes that looks like the ones he makes. I suppose I'm liking flats more and more these days. I am TRYING to keep my closet pared down and only full of items I love.

But the one thing that keeps happening, is I keep figuring out that things are trendy a season or two (or more late). And, I think I'm ok with it.
Take Toms for example. Apparently I'm at least a year late on this one. I JUST NOW noticed that everyone in San Francisco owns a pair. And I want them too. Yes, I know, they are so huge they're probably out, but I'm ok with that. They look cool. And as long as I start wearing them soon, I'll still look a little current. Right?
Last year, I discovered Dr. Martens. They were big for spring, but when did I figure out they were cool and buy them? December last year. Yep. Winter. Late.

But I think I'm ok with that. Maybe that's my thing. I've always been nervous about being the first to wear trends. Always felt weird and self-conscious. There are some things I'll always love and go to, like wide-leg pants, high waists, and maxi skirts. But anything new or, at least, new again, I need time to accept it. Then I can get into it. I'm not an early adopter, but I am more of a "peak of the trend" person. I guess that's what my new decade is all about: accepting that I'm a late trender and being ok with it. Oh yeah, and my birthday was 2 seasons ago. ;-)

Platforms, Flares, Furniture, and Fun!

I just love my child. Yep. I'm obsessed. I'm also obsessed with flare pants. I tried some one for the first time this week at Old Navy. They have several different kind: Slim, mini, and retro. It was weird putting them on. I realized how long it has been since I wore a giant bell-bottom pant. I love them, but I gotta say, I might actually have a hard time letting go of skinny jeans...

Then I have the issue of what shoes to wear? Platforms undeniably are best with flares (oh so retro! Love it, even if they're giving me 90's flashbacks). I haven't really been in the mood to wear heels that much anymore - the mood has reduced with the number of hills I have to walk up and down in them daily or carry them with me (either my feet or my shoulders suffer). So, what is the logical next step? Flatforms!! Finally we can get some less pricey ones from Jeffrey Campbell for under $200. Hopefully soon we'll be able to get them for really cheap! Oxfords are nice, too... really obsessed with them right now. I know, I'm SO behind the times.

Next on the list. Furniture. I got an arc lamp. I ordered some couches. I need to make curtains. Can't wait to show you the final result! It's going to be amazing! Got a new comforter for the bed, an entryway mirror. Oh man, things are shaping up!

A Step in the Right Direction

There are so many things I want to blog about. From everything to how
fun/frustrating it is to shop for furniture that costs more than my
wedding ($4000) to why I feel like I look like Elaine from Seinfeld lately in my maxi dress/ Oxford combos. However, I feel most strongly that I should update you about some of
the latest developments in my ongoing struggle with PPD and motherhood.

Ever since I started dealing with PPD, I have thought and learned so
many things. Most important of which is: Be kind to myself (which for me meant, taking drugs, not being anxious to get off of them, and getting my husband on board with supporting me by attending therapy together). It's a lesson I have to relearn over and over again, but it's gotten easier.

I'm more than a year into my struggle and I can finally say I'm starting to learn life a little better. Things are not as chaotic as they were for awhile (I've been through 2 moves, a job change, and buying a house in that time) and routines with Double and my job are starting to stabilize.

I feel like I now have much insight into this disease. Like, one of the facets of the disease is that you really, really want to control it and make yourself better. Like if I was stronger I could deal with the sleep deprivation better or if I tried harder I could deal with the mess or enjoy my daughter more. Or once I took medication for a few weeks, I should be able to go off of it and be fine. But, alas, it wasn't until my life has stabilized AND the Zoloft kicked in that I really started to feel like myself again. At the time when I wanted to get off the meds, I had to force myself to stop that desire and truly go through the stages of denial and mourning and acceptance. At first I was in denial that I needed drugs. Once I was on them and felt as though I couldn't get off, I had to mourn the loss of being a "normal" mom. And once I mourned that, I finally accepted the meds. It helped that I hit rock bottom. I felt like I couldn't go on and I was willing to do ANYTHING--drugs, meds, whatever to feel better. Once I came to that conclusion things really got better for me. But that was 8 months post-partum.

For the last 2 months, I've been filtering in some normalcy. I've been watching slightly more scary TV shows (True Blood, I love you), which I had cut out for months due to my anxiety. I've started drinking caffeine again and occasionally even eating chocolate before bed. I've even had a little alcohol now and again. My thoughts about this go back to the freedom I feel in 1) being on the Zoloft and 2) knowing that if I EVER have any trouble sleeping with these things I can stop them AND take more sleeping medication/anti-anxiety medication. This is an enormous step for me and goes a long way to helping me feel like myself again.

And for the first time in 8 months I'm tapering down my sleep medication again. But this time SO MUCH SMARTER with medical advice. My Dr. advised me to wait until my life was calmer post-move. So I did. He advised me to take an even smaller step than I was taking (my first tapering experiences were .5 mg less, then .25 mg less, now 1/8 mg less!). And so far, I have successfully tapered down to 7/8 mg. I know it doesn't sound like much, but to me it's huge because it's happened without me having ANY trouble. No getting up in the middle of the night, feeling depressed and disheartened not being able to sleep while everyone else snoozes peacefully, waiting for the stronger doses to kick in. It's just enough that my body can sleep and still a little less than I was taking. I've had to shut out the voices of those around me who tell me maybe "I'm taking to much" and remember that they aren't medical experts. My Dr. is. I tried to do this on my own before and it didn't work. It was horrible, actually. If it takes me 16 weeks to get off the meds, I will be delighted. If it takes me 16 months, I'll still be delighted. At this point, I'm just grateful for sleep, medicated or otherwise. Sometimes I'm disappointed I can't "do it on my own" but then I remember how horrific it was to be sleep deprived and I'm thankful that drugs do exist for this purpose and that they work for me.

Anyway, it's a step in the right direction. :-)

Using a Spoon, Saying Words...

My full-fledged toddler is working on using a spoon. She has a baby doll now that she is obsessed with and can say "baby" along with a growing list of additional words. She is amazing!

I am working hard on trying not to work too hard. That is, I'm working hard at work, so I'm trying to rest when I am home--trying to give myself a break. Trying not to take on too many projects. Yesterday I (wahoo!) upcycled an ugly jumpsuit into a cute pair of pants. I'd been working on that for about 6 days give or take... It was a simple fix - cut off the top, turn under the top, add a piece of elastic... would have taken me 2 hours in the old days...

This weekend my big plan is to *maybe* have a garage sale and otherwise work on making roman shades for our kitchen (yay!). I ordered tons of fabric and I'm about halfway through curtains for Double's room. If I'm lucky I'll finish one of those. Otherwise, I've been instructed to lay low. Maybe, I'll get around to trying out my nail gun (did you know you needed an air compressor to make it work? I didn't, so I had to buy one before I can use it! Sheesh!)...

DIY Crazy!

Ok, so I guess now that I have a house I'm feeling incredibly crafty. I want to make EVERYTHING! First, I have lofty plans to make all the draperies in my house (because, seriously, why would I do it any other way?). And, roman shades in the perfect color that complements the dining chairs.

And lighting.

And outdoor storage furniture.

And indoor storage furniture.

And a play kitchen for Double.

Yeah.

It's possible right? A nail gun, some wood, some fabric, and my sewing machine is all I need. Oh yeah, and time. Well, hopefully I can make some awesome stuff even with minimal time. Wish me luck!

Living My Fashion Dream Vicariously Through My Child

Yep, that's right. My daughter is a fashion model. For a kid's clothing line. Booyeah! I wanted her to model and my wish came true! It also helps that I happen to know a designer. Doesn't she look adorable?

She modeled for the new brand (coming out soon!) Rim Zim Kids started by the same people who own Origany, an organic clothing line for kids. I'll also be sending them some sweater designs in the near future and maybe even designing some fabric! Exciting! At least if I don't have time to make my own, I can design for others.

Just what you don't want to hear

So recently I have been feeling a little left out at work. I can't party like I used to, for one, because I have a child and, well, 10 pm feels late to me. For anothe,r I am struggling with postpartum depression and insomnia and I really have trouble doing things in the evenings after work, which basically rules out any after-work drinks. Not to mention the medications I'm on aren't supposed to be missed with alcohol. And most of my coworkers are young and single and male.

Anyway, I recently posted a question on a parents network asking if and how other people have dealt with this. The only answer I got was terrible! It was the opposite of helpful. Basically they said: it's probably all in my head. Most likely I'm reading them wrong. It's possible that the SSRIs I'm on are causing my personality to change and they are seeing me differently because my personality is now changed from all the drugs. Possibly it's permanent and I should probably stop taking them because they are so harmful.

Wow. Way to kick me when I'm down. Thanks anonymous responder! You just gave a PPD woman something more to worry about-- her personality being permanently altered-- becoming a crappier person personality-wise. Basically I'm rejectable now because of all the drugs? Thanks a lot! Fortunately I know he/she is wrong, but still... Ow!

It has been a whirlwind!

So if you follow this blog regularly, but you don't know me personally you've probably wondered why I haven't posted in 2 months or so. Well, I have a VERY good reason! Well, actually multiple reasons.

First, I had pnuemonia for 2 months. I was in bed for almost every day of those 2 months! It was rough. Why didn't I post with all that time in bed, you ask? Well, I was not just exhausted--so exhausted to do much of anything, including post, all my energy was going into trying to do a little work AND the next thing:

Second, we bought a house. It turned out that during the course of my illness an offer we put on a house was accepted and I managed 90% of the details (calling people, signing and sending papers, managing home improvement tasks, buying needed items for the house, and more) all from bed. So my energy, when I had it, went into that.

Third, we moved into the new house. Yes, I was still sick with pneumonia. Clearly, this means I was without internet access for a time, was busy watching my relatives pack and unpack me, doing yardwork, organizing, etc. All of which meant, blogging was the furthest from my mind!

Anyway, I'm recovered now (mostly) and things are starting to settle down a bit. The company I work for was just purchased, so there's some turbulence at work, but at least my personal life is a little less intense. We are still pretty busy with home projects and family visits, but it should be a slow summer (I hope!). That means, hopefully, I can post some of the giveaways that are stacking up in my inbox, soooooo STAY TUNED! :-)

California Real Estate is like an Arranged Marriage

So I've been thinking a lot about real estate lately since we are in the process of buying our first house on the west coast (holla!) and after a recent trip to the Midwest and after watching a lot of House Hunters I would like to draw a comparison between house-hunting in the Midwest vs. house-hunting in the California market.

In the Midwest, it's like dating in the Western world. You look around, shop around, find a few you like, go back a few times, but generally, you take your time and don't bit until you are sure you are getting a good (read: much lower than asking) price. You fall in love and then take the plunge.

In California, it's like an arranged marriage. Your (excellent) real estate agent finds out exactly what you want, shows you a few places and if you like one, you bite immediately. If you wait, you may not get it. If you hold out, you may regret it. And you better sure as heck put in a good (read: higher than asking price) bid if you really think you want it. Basically you take the plunge and fall in love (or regret) later.

It's two different worlds, but in the end hopefully good results. So far our arranged marriage house seems like we will stay in love for a long time!

Hello all! Soon I will have more giveaways and knitted projects for you to view. But for now, I wanted to tell you that I'm going to open a business soon. It's just a little fun experiment for me, but I'm going to be selling baby and bath products. I'm sewing some nursing pads and I made some hard lotion bars, so I'm going to sell a new mom kit for nursing! I'm also going to sell some baby washcloths with some natural baby bath soap I made and have a baby bath kit!

It's all very exciting and I'm also going to be selling many knitted baby items I've made, such as sweaters, hats, and maybe even some leg warmers.

It will probably be a few more months before I'm up and running. I'll be opening a store on artfire.com as well as going to the Oakland Art Murmur to sell my goods in person. Hooray!

BTW, did I tell you I made some baby pants for Amelia? They turned out great and they were so easy! I will try to post pictures and maybe even a pattern soon...

Maxi Obsessed!

I have been SO obsessed with maxi dresses since I saw that they were going to be huge for spring. This is my MOST favorite item of clothing. I love love love long skirts!

So I bought this one (above) from Forever 21. Super cute on! Anthro and Free People have some similar ones, but, frankly, I'd prefer to spend $22 over $80... I thought I could probably make this, but then realized I won't have the time. So I bought it.

Then I made myself a reversible maxi skirt this weekend. Pics to come soon! Another one is also in the works. Hopefully I'll have a chance to finish it this weekend. I'm trying to figure out a semi-complicated ruffle situation...

Lately I've been on a shoe craze. I received a lovely and generous bonus from work and my husband and I decided to split a small percentage of it (most of it went to savings) for things for ourselves. Well, duh, I bought shoes. Well, mostly boots. If you know me, you know that I have a sort of boot obsession. I recently cleaned out the boot closet, revealing only the best and brightest (and most expensive) ones that I loved and wore all the time.

So, naturally, now that times are a-changin' I had to replenish the boot closet with new, beautiful shoes that reflect my personality, style, and the latest trends. So here is what I bought:

I have this fantasy that I have a small business handmaking cute kids clothes and accessories and selling them at craft fairs and art things then someday selling so many that I sell at boutiques and Nordstrom and, yeah.... well, anyway, seems a lot nicer than sitting at a computer all day. Although I love love love my job.

Accomplishments of 2010

So I know it's a teeny bit late for a "reflections" post, but I'm going to do one anyway. Last year, I saw the biggest changes of my entire life and I'd like to note what I accomplished in 2010 in no particular order:
1. Finished making a bunch of baby stuff.
2. Finished making a baby using my uterus.
3. Pushed a 7 lb, 13 oz baby out of my uterus.
4. Used my boobs to feed and continue growing my baby until she was 10 months old (longer, but she only got as old as 10 months in 2010). She hasn't had any formula, even though there have been a couple occasions when we considered it (i.e. we didn't rule it out, just never had to use it, thus she's "pure" hehe).
5. Published my first (albeit slightly crappy) public sewing pattern on the Internet.
6. Finished making 3 nursing tops and a nursing bra.
7. Made about 14 baby hats for friends and charity.
8. Darned at least 12 socks.
9. Made a bunch of nursing pads for fun and then gave them to charity.
10. Made 3 wrap shirts.
11. Shopped for a new wardrobe, then lost another 15 lbs and then shopped for another one (!)
12. Knitted and crocheted 5 pairs of legwarmers for Amelia and some other babies as gifts.
13. Knitted mittens for Amelia out of necessity.
14. Started knitting another pair of mittens for Amelia because the first ones aren't really very good.
15. Crocheted a blanket for my nephew.
16. Crocheted and knitted 9 Colts hats for my in-laws and my nephew for Christmas.
17. Crocheted 3 scrap scarves and sent them to friends and family as gifts.
18. Completed a pattern alteration to the wrap top to make it a wrap dress, but never got a chance to make it.
19. Held 2 clothing swaps at my house.
20. Sewed 4 roll-up organizers.
21. Stepped up my organizing of a sewing group, but then had to leave it because we moved.
22. Moved.
23. Got a new job.
24. Learned that I have PPD (well, PPA, technically) and attended a PPD IO program.
25. Fought with the insurance company over 4 separate doctors/therapist charges to get both them and me better deals.
26. Attended another PPD support group.
27. Saw 6 psychiatrists and 6 therapists and took 9 medications for post-partum ailments.
28. Took a road trip all up and down the Northwestern coast while Amelia was 2 months old. Saw sights and family we'd never seen before.
29. Took a trip to Indiana to see family, attend a wedding, and dedicate Amelia.
30. Posted countless pictures for friends and family so they can see the baby.
31. Skyped many times to keep in touch with friends and family and so they can see how the baby is growing.
32. Taught my baby sign language.
33. Lost 40 lbs.
34. Joined 2 gyms.
35. Put 2 offers on a house (didn't get it, thankfully!).
36. Performed various domestic duties such as cleaning, cooking, baking, and more.
37. Started knitting a sweater for myself.
38. Kept in touch with my friends and attended multiple parties events and somehow maintained a social life while working, taking care of, and nursing a baby.
Probably more (and definitely more in my career), but that's all I can think of now!

Shrinkx Hips Review

Hey, Ladies,

The long awaited review is here. I'm finally about back to my pre-pregnancy weight so I can finally comment on this product.

I used it as instructed in the manual, I wore it from about 1.5 weeks postpartum to 8 weeks postpartum almost every single day during the day and not at night. I wore it 2 inches below my hips, as instructed.

Now, after losing most of the weight (minus about 5 lbs) I can fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans pretty well. Whether that would have happened without the Shrinkx Hips is hard to say. I can say for sure that since I am at least back to the same size I was before pregnancy, so if my hips would have gotten bigger, then Shrinkx Hips worked.

I will say this: I think it is surprising that I can fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans and I still have 5 lbs left to lose, so that may mean the Shrinkx Hips did work and I am actually now smaller than I was before because the extra padding isn't keeping me from fitting in them. If, in a few fewer pounds I am smaller than I was before, I will edit this post and claim it really did work!

Here's what I thought about the product in general:

Pros:
*It was easy to wear under clothes. No one knew I had it on.
*It was easy to use.
*I didn't have to sleep with it on.
*It stayed in place well and didn't inhibit my ability to sit, stand, or move around. It didn't move when I moved either. I even worked out with it on--like running, walking, the elliptical, biking, etc.

Cons:
*It didn't fit me the way it shows the model on the package. It fit me by sort of folding in on itself somewhat around my hip area (fitting almost like a rubber band), this caused it to be hard to make sure it was fitting evenly over my hip area. Also the velcro stopped fitting onto itself and became irritating to my skin where it was exposed to it. This is my biggest complaint.
*It was sometimes hard to tell whether I was adjusting my underwear, the Shrinx Hips product, or my pants when I'd sit down. It would feel like it was riding up sometimes, but for the most part it actually stayed in place really well.
*I don't see how you could wear this over any piece of clothing. First of all it looks funny. Second, that's when it rides up and sometimes off your hips completely and, third, it makes it really hard to go to the bathroom! Every time you go you have to unstrap it. So it's best worn under your underwear and then wearing it when you pee, which is perfectly fine. it doesn't get in the way at all.

*Edit 4/19/2011: I'm now 10 lbs less than my pre-pregnancy weight and I can DEFINITELY tell that my hips are now shaped differently! The top part of my hips were always a bit wider than the lower part making it hard for me to find pants and making me more curvy than I would like. But now, my shape is changed! That part of my hips is NOTICEABLY smaller and what I wanted for many years. Now I can fit into all kinds of pants with no problems, including a full size smaller than I've ever been able to wear. I'm 100% positive that this is the result of Shrinkx Hips and I'm SO GLAD I decided to use this product now. Much cheaper than surgery and something you can't do with surgery anyway! Hooray for Shrinkx Hips! I'm a convert!

Looking Behind No More

It's so interesting to me that I have a new job. I can't believe it. I'm not talking about the job of being a mother. I'm talking about a new job for pay that I'm currently working at right now.

It's amazing. I think about all the things I left behind at my last job: the hard-to-work-with boss who made my life and coworkers nervous and unhappy. I'm so thankful I never again have to face her boss and pretend to be interested in her narcissistic comments about her taste in wine, her boat, how much money she spends on this and that, the parties she and and her husband throw and never invite us to. I never again have to suck up to her or pretend to care about what she says the company is doing. I never have to be filled with terror at the prospect of entering my old boss' office for a meeting. Thank God. THANK GOD!

I've moved on. It's hard to remember sometimes. Sometimes I feel like this is just a fake job--a maternity leave job that I'll leave and have to go back to the old job when my baby gets bigger. But I don't. What a beautiful thing to leave it all behind. To start a new chapter. A new baby. A new job. A new life. It feels so freeing. Yes, it's work. Yes, it's back to the daily grind of endless days of toil in hopes to save money to one day retire. Yes, it's very hard to commute for 1.5 hours each way and know I'm missing 12 hours a day of my baby's rapidly changing life.

But in a positive environment and in a new adventure. And I'm so thankful I get to do it. I'm so thankful that God opened this door for me at just the right time and closed a door for Aaron at the perfect time so he could stay at home with our daughter. What a privilege! And I know the right opportunity will present itself for him when the time comes. And I know I'm doing the right thing for my family by working so we can have a roof over our heads and food to eat. It's another way of nurturing my child.

I can't believe I don't have to go back. I'm so glad. So glad. So so so glad.

I've been working tirelessly in between bouts of the baby screaming to upload my first ever original pattern to BurdaStyle.com. Let me tell you it is no small task. It's already taken me about 4 hours of work to copy it onto a piece of pattern paper, section it out and then cut out the sections. I still have to scan each individual piece (about 20 pages, argh) with my super-slow scanner and then get it uploaded in some form of readable format. Sheesh!

It's taking literally hours and on top of that it's about 80 degrees in the house and all the fans I have blowing are blowing around the pieces. BUT, on the plus side, I'm SOOO close to finishing and getting this ready for other people to use, and that is very exciting. Hooray for me!

Vancouver, BC Fashion

So, in keeping with my vacation theme, I must comment on the fashion in Vancouver.

One brand describes the fashion in Vancouver, which makes sense, since it was born and raised (and still lives) there: Lulu Lemon.

I'm not a huge fan of gymwear as daywear, but I gotta say, Vancouver manages to pull it off. Everyone seems to be wearing something by Lulu Lemon and, if not, have worked in some other kind of yoga-y gymwear-y component into their outfit.

The most noticeable thing about Vancouver fashion is the shoes. Hardly anyone wears heels! Even the most fashionable of outfits were paired with flats. It seems that Vancouver residents identify with comfort over fashion in most cases, and in the best cases comfort AND fashion. That also makes sense since Vancouver seems to be the most active city I've ever seen. Everyone seems to walk, bike, or take public transport over driving.

In keeping with this theme I spent a few hours at the Lulu Lemon factory store in Burnaby and I wasn't all that impressed with the prices, however, I am now VERY impressed with the clothes. I had no idea gymwear could double as streetwear, but it can and it's so cute and it's *almost* worth the extra expense. What do you think?

Portland: the friendly hipster place

This week we were in Portland and I thought you might appreciate my musings on the fashion scene up there.

First, the most noticeable thing about Portland is the hipsters. They are everywhere--funky hair, funky clothes, hippies, punk rockers, thrift kids, even a few pirates. And, it's really so common that you hardly notice it. I would say that where other big cities have noticeable fashionistas, Portland has noticeable hipsters. I'm sure there were fashionable people mucking about, but they really weren't as interesting.

That being said, Portland was almost a bit TOO hipster. The city is clean and modern, with the best public transportation system I have ever seen in the US (free in the downtown area, too!). For something so fancy, you'd expect people to be more uppity, but not so. Everyone in Portland seemed really nice and approachable and at the more hipster-like places (for example, Rogue Brewery) people were almost too chilled out. Very much men with beards saying in slow, Chong-like drawls, "That's cool man. " This juxtaposed with the outdoorsy types who just want to go hiking/climbing/biking/rafting/etc.

In addition, 2 people stopped me in the street in the one day I was there--one punk girl to tell me my earrings were "sick" and another hippy lady who twisted a blond dreadlock around her finger and gave me a baby rose for my baby. While on the train a few people talked to us, including 2 men stone cold wasted at 1pm in the afternoon. I can't remember the last time any non-homeless person talked to me on the street in San Francisco.

BTW, the weather in Portland sucked! I wonder if it gets any better and how cold it is in the winter? The east coast was having 70 and 80 degree weather and portland was in the 40s and rainy. Rude!

Finally, I'm getting a chance to show you some of the baby stuff I've knitted! Hooray! It's not normal fashion, but instead Baby Fashion! Above, is a picture of my model, Amelia, 1 month old (a.k.a. my daughter). She has the tummy time blanket I designed and knitted for her on top of her. She is doing her "fight the power" pose, which, combined with her hair, will make her our punk rock princess!

Above, I made the changing pad cover she is laying on of Lion Brand fisherman's wool both dyed and undyed. I actually dyed the dyed portion myself years ago using Koolaid! More info on that here if you'd like to learn how.

Hat: Cabled baby hats pattern made in Elann Peruvian Baby Cashmere yarn and finished off with a bit of Alpaca. Can't seem to find the name of it at the moment. Pants are made from this pattern in a superwash wool sock yarn. I think it was Happy Feet.

These baby pants are these pants made in a Superwash wool. Again, not sure of the name of the yarn. I can find out if you want. Stripes are of my own invention. I though they looked pleasantly 80's and girly.

BTW, baby pants are a great thing to knit! We have so many onesies, but then there's nothing on her legs and socks don't say on that well. And you can lanolize them and use them as a diaper cover or a diaper cover cover haha... Plus I've been informed that wool is the best fabric for all seasons. Apparently it's moisture wicking so that in the summer it keeps you cool and in the winder it keeps you warm.

My Advice on Sewing for Beginners

So recently I was asked what books or websites or other advice I might recommend for a beginning sewer. And I thought it would be cool to share this with you.

It's hard to find things that are geared towards the beginning sewer. Either that or I just have never really tried too hard to look. For books, the best one I have seen is the Reader's Digest New Complete Guide to Sewing. My sewing teacher last year recommended it and it is really good. It teaches a lot of techniques in very clear step-by-step directions from hand sewing to fancy advanced designer techniques. It is a really good resource when you can't figure something from the pattern out. If you think you might keep this up longer than one or two patterns, it is a worthwhile investment. If you are trying to teach yourself to sew from the ground up, a good book that I have is The Ultimate Sewing Book by Maggie McCormick Gordon. It takes you through sewing items from easy to complicated. They start you off sewing curtains and take you to progressively more complicated things. Personally, if I had to buy only one book, though, I would go for the Reader's Digest book.

The best website I can recommend is www.burdastyle.com. They have patterns on there and, even better, a lot of message boards where you can ask questions and get advice from people with more experience. A few other sewing-related websites that will help you sew your own clothes without patterns include Threadbanger.com and craftstylish.com. There are probably others, but I can't think of them right now.

I also have some of my own advice that I will offer...

If you are just starting this for the first time, it is crucial that you have someone with experience to use as a resource.

That being said, here's some more advice:
1. Get the right pattern. For a beginner I recommend a skirt or dress or something very simple marked "easy" or "1 hour" or "2 hour" pattern or something like that. Don't push it to begin with. You just want to learn to do it for the first time. If you want to try something very simple without a pattern, you can even search online for "simple skirt tutorial" or "easy skirt tutorial" and find people that will tell you how to make a skirt out of a certain sized rectangle and some elastic. That might be a good way to go. It will help you with some basic construction techniques and sort of start you on the right track. Burdastyle may have some free patterns that are easy and simple. I remember them having a dress on there that was super simple. Email me if you want me to provide details. Also, be sure you get the right fabric that goes with the pattern. Be sure if it is for woven fabric, you got woven fabric and for knits, a knit, etc..
2. Get the right SIZE pattern. Throw all your preconceived notions aside about your size. Do NOT get your ready-to-wear size. Instead, measure your hips, waist, and bust according to the fit charts and buy the size for the biggest part of your body. If you don't do this, you will have wasted time and money buying and making the wrong size. Here's an article on how to find your correct size. Just to give you an example, my pattern size was a 12 and I wore a ready to wear size 8. Now, I have no idea what my size would be, but I would still go by my measurements.
3. Consider making a test garment. Ideally, if you were going to do this the right way, you would copy the pattern size you plan to make on another sheet of paper and fit that to your body and then use that to make the correct size in a cheap fabric, called muslin (the garment is called a "muslin"). Then you would make the final garment once you've found out how well it fits. Personally, I find all this a huge pain and I'd rather make an entire garment before finding out that it doesn't fit me than try to do all that, unless I was using expensive fabric. But I still do follow most of this process when I use commercial patterns because I want them to fit. And trying to fit it to yourself is another thing altogether. But at least this helps you determine your size.
4. Start slowly. Commercial patterns in the US are, fortunately, written very clearly for the most part. When reading them try to relax and just take it for it's words. Don't try to second guess the instructions. They are not trying to trick you or tell you to do multiple things at once. The pattern almost always explains what you should do using words and visuals and if you need more instruction, you can refer to your Reader's Digest book. Sometimes they don't define a technique very clearly or they mark it in bold because they assume you know how to do it. And you can look those up in your book too. Otherwise, just try to follow the pattern literally step by step. Stay as organized as you can in knowing which piece is which, too.
5. Other than following the instructions the only other thing you need to know are these things: The first thing you do is cut out the fabric. I know this is obvious, but I actually forget about this every time until I open it up and I'm like, oh yeah, duh. Wash your fabric first before starting, then iron it (or try to lay it out flat without too many wrinkles) and pin the pattern pieces on the fabric according to the way they outline in the pattern. Be sure to transfer the markings from the pattern (the triangles and circles and squares--you shouldn't have too many if it's a simple pattern). You can do this using a tracing wheel and tracing paper (you can buy that at Joann's or other sewing stores) or chalk or some other fancy transfer thing. Be sure you mark on the wrong side of the fabric (the part you don't want to show). After you do all that, you are ready to start the pattern!

The Belly Bandit vs. Shrinx Hips

A friend of mine just told me about the Belly Bandit. You've probably seen this in relation to Kourtney Kardashian.

It basically claims to do the same thing as the Shrinx Hips, but with the stomach area. I'm not sure I think it's that great, but maybe someone who's used it can weigh in.

The hormone relaxin in your body post-pregnancy affects your bones and other hard ligaments. Not exactly your muscles and organs, which is pretty much all that exists in your belly area. I guess that this product could help your muscles go back to where they should be faster and certainly your rib cage, but for me, this isn't the area I care about. My upper body looks fairly flat these days (or maybe that's just because my boobs are twice as large). It's my hips that need attention. I want to change my BONES! I want my hips to be smaller. Because, lets face it ladies, you can work on your muscles any other day, but once that hormone leaves your body, you can't do anything else about your frame and bones. And, I don't want to think about that later when I'm wondering what I could have done to make myself smaller later!

On the other hand, maybe my body type is one where I don't really require a product that helps my belly, but rather my hips. I've always been very curvy with a small waist and minimally sized belly. So something that shrinks my belly area isn't as appealing as something that shrinks my hips. But maybe I will be singing a different tune when I lose the boobs...

Shopping! Me! Again!

Throughout my pregnancy I continued subscribing to WhoWhatWear daily, which has kept me fairly up-to-date on fashion trends. Their fashion is a bit edgier than I typically like, but it still keeps me inspired, like the compilation above from their Style Stalker post this week. I've looked longing for 9 months at the cute outfits and couldn't wait to fit into them again. Finally, this week I was able to take a step towards it for the first time in 9 months!

I have a few barriers to my shopping this time around. For one, I'm a whole new size, at least temporarily, and I was getting sick of wearing the 3 ugly things I had that fit me. Second, now that I'm getting a reduced paycheck and DH is unemployed, I can't be spending tons of money on much of anything.

So, I went to TJ Maxx to see what I could find in the way of jeans, which I thought would be exactly what I needed to complete my style for the next few months of maternity leave. Also, I can easily make skirts and dresses, but not so much jeans, so it made sense to invest.

Lo and behold I found 2 lovely pairs of jeans! They are Express Jeans (hooray for them making jeans that fit my curves!) and look similar to these (but I only paid $14 for one pair and $10 for the other--I forgot how amazing TJ's is for cheaper deals like this. I was getting distracted by looking for extreme designer stuff to notice this stuff before):

I couldn't be more thrilled. Except, I am now 2 sizes larger than I was pre-pregnancy. Yikes! Still wearing the shrinx hips thingie, so hopefully that helps. Also, I'm still about 25 pounds over what I was before. Now I'm finally starting to work out though, so I hope that helps me get down to a normal weight. I wanted to be prepared, though, for the eventuality that I may not go back down to my original size and learn to love my body as it is. And that starts with dressing it correctly.

To that end, I actually was able to take an honest look at my closet this week and get rid of all those things I had that I was holding on to that never fit right or I never really liked, but I kept because it was cheap, or I had some emotional attachment to it. And now I have a nice, streamlined closet full of clothes that are cute, that sort of fit (not right now and if I don't go back to my original size in the next few months I'll be getting rid of them too) and that do fit and look good.

Hooray! I'm getting back on track with fashion again. It's good to be back!

Shrinkx Hips: Getting my hips back to their normal size and maybe smaller?

So, I stumbled across Shrinkx Hips while I was searching online for some baby stuff and OMG, what a great idea! It uses the leftover hormone relaxin that's in your body after pregnancy to allow you to shrink your hips back to their normal size (or maybe smaller?). You wear the belt around your hips for the first 6 to 8 weeks after pregnancy and it gradually makes them smaller. What a cool idea! I bought one because I don't want to find out I'm 2 sizes bigger and there's nothing I can do about it later. So I'm taking proactive steps now to ensure I am doing what I can to go back to my pre-pregnancy size. I'll let you know if it works. There are not a lot of reviews online about it, so I will test it and get back to you!

I can fit into jeans!!

So, I'm one week out from having my baby. This time last week I was in labor. AND, I'm able to fit into normal people jeans! WAHOO! Now, granted, they are the pants I bought to wear through my 4th month of pregnancy, but I tried them on 4 days ago and couldn't squeeze into them, and I was getting worried that the only pants I'd be able to wear for awhile would be maternity ones, so I'm thrilled that I can wedge myself into these!

I've been measuring my hips and waist and I'm losing about an inch or so a day (or at least I was), so at that rate, I should be hopefully able to fit into my normal clothes fairly soon. i can wear normal shirts now, but mostly that's not helpful since I would probably get milk all over them. Nursing changes everything in the upper area! Nursing tops are a lifesaver.

Yes, I had her 3 days early, much to my surprise! She was born on March 1, 2010 at 1:40 pm after about 5 hours of labor and an hour of pushing. She was 7 lbs 13 oz and 20 3/4 inches long.

Easing back into fashion...

So this week I went shopping for the first time in many, many months. At this point in my pregnancy it's not really possible for me to shop for myself. I have no idea what size I will be when the pregnancy is over, plus I can barely remember what clothes I currently own. Then there's the whole issue of having to find tops that are easy to wear when I'm nursing. And, of course, I can skip over the entire maternity section because I'll only be pregnant for at most another 2 weeks.

BUT I am still reading my beloved Elle magazine, watching project runway, and dreaming of clothes I can make and buy post-baby once I figure out my size and such. I'm sewing alot and trying to build my skills as much as I can. Right now I'm working on nursing bras and I'm going to try to design a nursing top from one of those, so hopefully I can make something semi-cute and fashionable.

For now, I'm focusing on the areas of fashion I love and it always comes back to shoes for me. I love shoes. I love the great styles of shoes out now--all chunky and delicious. All the heels are so massive and fun and ankle boots and variations of boots are so great, even for spring! I love it! I hope I'll be able to get back into my cute shoes and wear heels without too much teetering post-baby. Anyway, I thought you'd all be glad to know that I'm easing back into fashion. I made a cardigan sweater this week for post baby that I'll try to show you at some point on here. For now, it's hanging in my closet. And I think I'm going to start knitting something for me, too. I've made so much baby stuff, I think it's time for me to have something!

Next, maternity leave. Ahhh... maternity leave. So nice to be off of work. On the plus side, I've had lots of time to get stuff done. I washed and hung all the baby clothes, organized the room, packed the hospital bag, and sewed and knitted and finished a LOT of stuff. Here's what I sewed, knitted and otherwise finished this week. I know it isn't very fashiony, but since this blog is geared towards fashion AND DIY, I thought you would appreciate knowing what I've been up to:

1 waterproof mattress cover using the same tutorial - out of some PUL fabric I was going to use to make diaper covers than decided I'd rather just borrow my friends'

Refinished/rebuilt a lampshade - I actually salvaged a crappy paper lampshade with no wires by adding my own wires and then covering it with fabric. Pretty amazing the work I put into avoiding buying something new (I couldn't find anything that worked anyway).
Created a closet organizer--the kind where you put a second rod below the main rod of your closet to create another level of hanging room. I made it by getting a rod at the hardware store, sawing it to the correct shape, drilling holes in the ends, then tying it to the upper rod. Cool, huh?

To exchange or not to exchange a gift

Please do not judge me too harshly, dear reader, but I am beginning to see the benefit of exchanging gifts for store credit.

Why is this occurring to me just now? Well, I am faced with a mass of gifts for the upcoming arrival of my baby and I'm starting to see a large amount of overlap on things I won't need as much of and a lot less of what I really need.

There are a few reasons why exchanging gifts for credit appeals to me:
1. People have different tastes - there are some things people have given me that I just plain don't like or don't want, even though I deeply appreciate the thought.
2. I have limited space - people have given me bulk amounts of certain items and I just don't have the room to store them.
3. Some people have not given me gift receipts or have given me second-hand items, which means that I have large numbers of items I can't return, making items I did receive receipts for something I can turn into things I can use.
4. There are some very large, expensive items I will need that I can use that store credit towards. As Rachel says in Friends, "Wouldn't you want me to exchange your gift for something I really want and can get a lot of use out of?" i.e. Credit!

This obsession with keeping our house clean and clutter to a minimum is shaping every aspect of my life, to the point where I'm now considering exchanging some Christmas gifts I received. I won't use the item much, most likely, but we're trying to keep baby costs low, and I could use the credit towards that or other items I need more (or might prefer over the gift).

As a gift-giver, I would much rather see my friends and family exchange a gift for something they would like or need than hate the gift or give it away.

I don't know if you think the same. Do you think it's offensive when someone returns an item you purchased for them?

Been meaning to post this for weeks. Been on hiatus due to baby stuff. I'm hoping that once I can fit into regular clothes again (and can upload some pics of my latest pregnancy outfits), I'll be blogging more often. In the meantime, I update more regularly on my baby blog here.

Having a background in Communication and Psychology, I tend to observe people and draw conclusions from my observations. It's no different with fashion. And even if I never saw your clothes, just looking at the shoes in your closet I can tell a lot about you. Here is some of my fashion psychology. I grabbed a few pictures of flats from shoes.com. These may be too easy, so next time I'll do heels:

This animal-print flat says that you 1) Appreciate your comfort or don't like heels and 2) You still want to look a little edgy and cute. You probably aren't extremely into fashion, but have an idea of the trends around you and make an effort to look nice without standing out too much. The animal print is your way of saying that you are a little edgy.
If you wear this oxford, chances are you are young and/or very into fashion. Your closet is probably filled with the latest edgy trends and you pride yourself on how you put them together. You work hard to make yourself current with fashion.

These comfort mary-janes tell me that you try to look cute, but are probably a conservative dresser. You refuse to wear shoes without proper support and comfort and hope to look nice doing it. Most likely you are over 30 and you either live somewhere rural or your friends would call you "earthy" or "outdoorsy". You probably don't care much for fashion or the latest trends, but still like to look put together when you leave your house, even if it's in casual, comfortable clothes.
This pink sneaker screams "streetwear." You probably are from or living in a working class neighborhood and you like looking sporty or street-chic. You pride yourself on looking good and get your hair and nails done regularly. You probably also like Ed Hardy and anything Playboy. You keep these bad boys clean all the time. They will never turn gray. Ever.
If you own this white sneaker, you are probably over 45. You wear them with jeans and not to the gym. Maybe you bought them for taking a vacation where you will walk a lot or just to run errands. Either way, you really don't care about fashion. You care about comfort and what you like. Maybe you'd LIKE to care about fashion, but you don't really know where to start. You were probably a stay-at-home mom, but now have kids that are grown or older and are trying to find a place for yourself in the world.

Draping Class Final Project

Here is a picture of the dress I made for my draping class final project! I designed the dress myself, draped the pattern, then cut, sewed, and fit the dress onto the dress form. The fabric is a great cotton print I got in the fashion district in LA years ago for only $1.99 a yard. I wanted to use it for something fun like this, and it turned out pretty good. My instructor loved it! Maybe someday I'll be able to fit into it.

Fashion, sewing, knitting...

Hey, all, so I'm super boring! I haven't posted anything on here but contests in awhile, so I'll give you a quick update. I was telling Aaron this week about how interesting it is that pregnancy is giving me a chance to sort of relax in a lot of ways I never allowed myself to before. Before, I was always looking for my next career choice, personal fullfillment avenue, the latest and greatest fashion, etc. I was all over the place.

The baby has given me some focus. For one thing, there's very little shopping I can do. And what shopping I can participate in will only last me a few more months, thus, investing in the latest fashion is somewhat of a moot point. So, that's why I haven't posted anything fashion-y on here in a long time. I still follow fashion, but I'm less interested in pursuing it constantly. As long as I know the general trends and stay with them during and after pregnancy, I'll be happy. I've also stopped wearing heels for the most part--hence why there's no posts on something that should fit me no matter what--shoes. But don't worry, ladies, I'm definitely not wearing anything you would describe as "comfortable." God forbid! My Marc Jacob flat mary janes and flat Fornarina boots are my best friends!

The baby has also given me a focus in the knitting and sewing area as well. I've sewn 2 really fabulous maternity items (for me, they are fabulous, because I never made anything I actually wore so often that was good quality before this) in record time, along with all kinds of baby crap and Christmas gifts. I've knitted a full maternity sweater, baby gifts for my friends, and am now embarking on making a ridiculous number of baby hats, mittens, and socks for my future baby.

Before, I would start a project and slowly get around to making it. Now, I'm motivated with a deadline and I have a lot to show for it. Maybe I should set more deadlines in the future so I get more sewing done!
